Princes Trust Programmes

The Prince’s Trust has various programmes that support young people to gain relevant skills and experiences that help them move on into education, training or employment. The courses are available to any young person aged 16-25yrs who are not in employment or education.

There are a few Prince’s courses that are available on the Island:

‘Get Started’ Programme:

The Prince’s Trust runs short courses called ‘Get Started’. They include activities such as sport, music, creative arts and other themes that may interest a young person.  The ‘Get Started’ course is a week long programme and will help you develop new skills, gain a qualification and build your confidence.

Who’s it for?

‘Get Started’ is for Jersey residents aged 16-25 who are unemployed or not in education.

‘Team’ Programme:

The team programme is a 12 week personal development course that gradually builds young people skills and confidence and on completing will achieve an accredited qualification. The team consists of a group of 12 -15 young people of a range of ages. Over the duration of the course you take part in various activities including a week long residential, two weeks work experience, take part in a community projects and much more. The course is free and provides young people an experience to inspire theme to move forward with new confidence and ambition. It is ideal for young people who feel that a lack of confidence or qualifications are holding them back.

• a nationally recognised qualification
• improved chances of moving into a job, education or training

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award - The D of E Jersey

The Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award programmes are open to 14 to 24 year olds.  You must complete all Duke of Edinburgh activities by your 25th birthday.  It equips young people for life regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests. Doing the Award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others.

Levels

You can do programmes at three levels which when completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

With assistance from adult Leaders, participants select and set objectives in each of the following areas:

• volunteering: helping people or the community
• physical activity: getting fitter
• developing skills
• going on an expedition
• taking part in a residential activity (gold award only)

There’s a lot of choice, so you can tailor your programme to your individual interests.

Your Commitment

It usually takes at least six months to complete your bronze programme.  You’ll need to commit at least an hour a week.

TESOL Teacher Training

TESOL = Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages.

Every year St Breleade’s College runs two teacher training courses where you can get a Trinity College London teaching qualification.

The Courses are intensive and practical, with emphasis on hands-on teaching experience, together with tutorials on modern techniques and methodology which can be put into practice in the classroom.

An internationally recognised teaching certificate providing you with the theory and practice to teach at home or abroad

The Trinity College CertTESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is one of the two most widely recognised EFL teaching qualifications (English as a Foreign Language). The course includes theory based input sessions covering the essentials such as teaching methodologies, phonetics and grammar together with observed teaching practice to give you the confidence to stand up in front of a class. The final element – external moderation from Trinity College London – validates the course, ensuring it is accepted by most language schools around the world including all British Council accredited schools such as ours.
